Abstract

Purpose: The number of the bilingual repatriated Korean students is increasing. They received education in foreign countries and use foreign languages before they have a good understanding of Korean. So they face many difficulties in articulation and understanding of Korean. Methods: This study measured duration of closure and aspiration of stops, duration of stops and their following vowels, the ratio of aspiration against closure of stops, the ratio of stops against their following vowels in \'vowel-consonant-vowel\' (VCV) context. Results: The repatrated students could distinctively produced closure and aspiration durations according to the phonation types (aspirated, tense vs. lax) at each place of articulation. The repatriated students could not distinctively produce them according to the places of articulation at any phonation types. Conclusion: This study will be a good support in evaluating and treatment of overall problem of repatriated elementary students in the pronunciation of Korean language.
